Another typhoon may hit KoreaAnother typhoon may be on track to hit Korea and could bring heavy rains to the Korean Peninsula, starting from Sunday, the nation’s weather agency said Friday. Typhoon Malou, the ninth tropical cyclone in the region this year, formed Friday afternoon about 470 kilometers southeast of Okinawa, Japan, and was moving northwest at a speed of 36 kilometers an hour, the Korea Meteorological Administration said. “There are yet many variables to predict the typhoon’s expected routes, but from the way things look now, it could reach waters south of Jeju Island in the evening of Sept. 6,” the KMA said. Currently, Malou is a relatively weak typhoon, but it could develop into a more powerful one, taking energy from warm waters on its way, the agency warned. The country is expected to come under the influence of the typhoon from Sunday, with heavy rains on Jeju Island from early Sunday morning and the rest of the nation by that afternoon. Meanwhile, the government con

Several weeks ago, I was in a discussion with a senior executive for a major Korea-based global company on the recent recognition South Korea has gained as the Asia-Pacific Design hub. I was asked to provide the names of some leaders in Korean design. One name immediately came to mind--Andre  Kim.  A creative force, he will be missed...Andre Kim at Gala Opening of Songdo Convensia, 2008Andre Kim eulogized for pioneering spiritPeople bade their last farewells to longtime fashion icon, Andre Kim, who was laid to rest Sunday, three days after he died at the age of 74. His death is no doubt a great loss not only to the fashion industry but also to the entire nation. Although he has passed away, he will remain in the hearts of Koreans forever. Needless to say, Kim was a great pioneer in fashion design. He became the country’s first male designer in 1962 when the profession was still considered a female realm. He held his first fashion show that year before opening

Naengmyeon : Korean Dish Naengmyeon(A traditional hansik dish) was a special treat enjoyed during the Joseon Dynasty according to historical records titled Dongguksesigi and Jinchaneuigye. There are two varieties of the specialty – Pyongyang naengmyeon and Hamheung naengmyeon. Pyongyang naengmyeon is cooked with noodles made from buckwheat mixed with starch served in cold broth made from water kimchi and chicken or pheasant stock, and it’s topped with sliced beef and a boiled egg. But Hamheung naengmyeon is served with noodles made from potato starch mixed with buckwheat. So, the noodles are tough and very chewy. They are served with sliced raw flatfish or stake mixed with spicy red chili paste with vinegar.

The life and death of Korea's Queen Min (Myeongseong) has long been a popular topic. I've written about the Queen and her impact on early US-Korean business relations in a number of my book. She was strong advocate of building ties with the U.S.More recently, in Korea Legal, I shared news on a lawsuit filed against the Japanese government over the Queen's murder. That said, an article in Korea Times ties the Queen's life with Korean saju.Saju can be translated as Four Pillars of Destiny. Although its origins are Chinese, Koreans have adopted and refined the concepts that describe four components impacting a person's destiny or fate. The four components center on the moment of birth-- the year, month, day, and time (hour). The life of Empress MyeongseongThe Empress MyeongseongBy Janet ShinThe story of the Empress Myeongseong, wife of King Gojong, is one of the most tragic events in Korean history. Unfortunately, it has been interspersed with a lot of distorted historical facts.
The Pittsburgh Pirates claimed pitcher Chan-ho Park off waivers from the New York Yankees on Wednesday. Park (박찬호, Park Chan-ho), the first Korean to make the Major Leagues, will join the worst team in baseball and a team that hasn't had a winning season since 1992.If Park pitches in a game he'll be the first Korean to play for Pittsburgh in the regular season. Prior to the 2008 season pitcher Byung-hyun Kim signed with Pittsburgh but didn't make the team out of training camp. Two other Asians have played on the Pirates but haven't done too well. Infielder Aki Iwamura was acquired before the 2010 season but was, in spite of his past success, one of the worst players on one of the worst line-ups in Pittsburgh history, hitting .182 in 54 games before being demoted. The first Japanese, and Asian, player was pitcher Masumi Kuwata, well-known in Japan but signed by the Pirates well after his prime, who appeared in 19 games in 2007.Hines Ward is the strongest connection between Pittsbu

U.S. teens learn Korean in programU.S. teenagers are taking part in an intensive Korean language course in a classroom. This is not out of the norm at Sogang University’s Korean Language Education Center, but these students, all of whom are 15-18 years old, are here as part of a special program sponsored by the U.S. State Department. Each student had their own unique reason for coming to Korea and joining the National Security Language Initiative for Youth.“I started watching Korean dramas and listening to Korean music and I got tired of watching them with subtitles,” said Zaneh Williams from Maryland.“This is a chance to see the world on my own and have a bit more independence,” said Gabrielle Hanley from Virginia. The students study Korean for four hours in the afternoon, with a strict “no English” policy.Learning Korean is “fun, but really intensive. We learned reading and writing in about a week,” said Gabrielle. But she said understanding Korean vocabulary and sentences is the harde

Park Chu-young stirring interest among EPL clubsIn between soccer seasons is the silly season ―- a time when clubs are looking for new players and vice-versa. The Internet bulges with stories of interest, denials, refusals, offers, medical tests, breakdowns and then, sometimes, a picture of a beaming player wearing a new club shirt. The World Cup comes around every four years to add extra impetus. The global stage acts as a month-long advertisement for players. In Korea’s case it lasted almost three weeks but it was enough to set a few wheels in motion.Potentially the biggest transfer of a South Korean player this summer is that of Park Chu-young. The striker, who turned 25 last week, already plies his trade in Europe and has been with AS Monaco since August 2008. His solid performances in France were noticed in bigger leagues and then his impressive displays in South Africa, have, according to reports, persuaded English Premier League clubs to check their bank balances to find the $10

Kim Yu-na may prepare Tango for new seasonSouth Korea’s figure skating icon Kim Yu-na said she wants to try out Latino or Spanish music like tango for the new season.“There are many genres I haven’t tried. FIFA praises Korea’s 2022 World Cup bidA FIFA team inspecting Korea’s bid for the 2022 World Cup on Sunday praised the country’s preparation efforts and passion to hold the global event after completing their four-day evaluation trip. The five-member team, led by Chilean Football president Harold Mayne-Nicholls, arrived in Seoul on Thursday as part of their two-month tour of all the nine bidders vying to host the 2018 and 2022 World Cup.“I was here for the 2002 World Cup. After eight years, I was able to see the legacy is not only the stadiums but seems to be on every body in this country,” said the head of the FIFA team. Speaking at a news conference in Seoul, the Chilean official stressed that his team was impressed by Koreans’ “enthusiasm and passion for the game.”He then highlighted the Seoul City Plaza, the national square that serves as a major cheering venue, noting he was able to witness that “Koreans’ passion for the game is increasing everyday.” “We got them to see how well
